• Kaikōura Whales By Air

    Land, sea & air adventure

Join us, and as a guest of Wings Over Whales and EcoZip, experience two of Kaikōura’s ‘must do’ adventures.  In a remarkable day, you’ll head out whale watching in the comfort of a light aircraft and then* enjoy EcoZip’s dual zipline, farm exploration and native forest experience.

Kaikōura is home to Sperm whales all year-round, as well as being a popular migratory and feeding route for many other species of whales and dolphins. From the air, you can experience the true magnitude of the world’s largest mammal, the whale. These animals can reach an impressive 18 metres in length and weigh up to 60 tonnes.

Following a quick check-in and safety briefing, take to the air with Wings Over Whales, who offer the most sustainable and low impact way to view Kaikoura’s famous whales, and dolphins. Flying in the company of up to just seven guests, their Gippsland GA8 Airvan aircraft are equipped with large, dome windows, for perfect viewing opportunities.  The Airvan flies at low speed, making in it the perfect way to orbit these magnificent animals, delivering incredible viewing and photography opportunities.

Once you return to terra firma, the adventure continues, as two of our expert guides take you through the gear-up process before you board ‘Moggy’ for the 4×4 journey to, and through, beautiful Rakanui Station.

Later, as part of a small group of up to just 12 guests, you’ll enjoy our zipline and native forest experience, riding five spectacular ziplines, ranging in length from 250m to 620m.

At the end of your zipline experience ‘Moggy’ will return you to Kaikōura airfield to collect your vehicle or ride our shuttle back to Kaikōura town.

*Note: The order of these activities can be changed. Your group can zip first, and fly later or on another day by prior arrangement, just speak with our friendly team who are happy to help organise your perfect day.

  • We had not been on a zip wire before this trip. EcoZip staff were very welcoming and very professional.

We were well prepared for the zip wires and our guides did a great job making sure we were all set before each run. The walk back to the centre with some information about the local flora and fauna was a great addition. We would thoroughly recommend EcoZip.
