• Kaikōura’s Kai Moana

    Fish & Zip adventure

Reel up a classic Kiwi adventure, as a guest of Kaikōura Fishing Tours and EcoZip, you can experience two of Kaikōura’s most iconic and recommended tours.  Meet some of the friendly locals as you seek out superbly fresh seafood while taking in the scenic landscape from both water and land. Embark on a marine excursion before soaring high on EcoZip’s dual zipline, farm exploration and native forest experience*.

Hop aboard Tomo’s custom built 12-meter-long charter vessel for a two-hour excursion to discover Kaikoura’s abundant seafood (kai moana). The name Kaikōura, given to this area by Māori, literally translates to food (kai) and lobster (kōura), reflecting how plentiful these infamous crayfish are around the coastline. Easy to catch fin fish, including sea perch, terakihi, gurnard, grouper, and blue code are also often caught, but the thrill for many is when it comes time to haul in the crayfish pots. With fishing there are never guarantees, but in most cases, you will likely take home one of these magnificent eating crustaceans, along with your fresher than fresh fish (bagged up and ready to take away) for your evening meal! Don’t worry if you’re inexperienced, Tomo and his crew will take care of everything (baiting the hooks, sorting out tangles, removing the fish from the hooks, and filleting your catch) just reel in your catch while enjoying the scenery!

Following your return to land, the excitement unfolds into an unforgettable adventure, offering postcard-worthy vistas and adrenaline-packed fun. Our two seasoned guides will equip you with all your safety gear before taking a journey aboard ‘Moggy,’ exploring the awe-inspiring 3,000-acre private Rakanui Station.

Join a small, intimate group of up to 12 guests for a thrilling zipline and native forest experience. Race your friend or partner as you glide over regenerative farmland on five exhilarating ziplines, ranging from 250m to 620m.

Concluding your zipline tour, you will take a short stroll to meet ‘Moggy’ to return you to Kaikōura airfield, followed by a scenic shuttle drive back to Kaikōura town.

*The order of these activities can be changed and it’s entirely feasible for your party to zip first, and kayak later, even on another day, by prior arrangement; just speak to our friendly team who will be happy to help.

  • We had not been on a zip wire before this trip. EcoZip staff were very welcoming and very professional.

We were well prepared for the zip wires and our guides did a great job making sure we were all set before each run. The walk back to the centre with some information about the local flora and fauna was a great addition. We would thoroughly recommend EcoZip.
