WELCOME TO THE SOUTH ISLAND’S NEWEST ZIPLINE TOUR

Views that leave you speechless, thrills that leave you breathless – this is Kaikōura like you’ve never seen it before. Your 3.5-hour eco-tourism adventure starts in the centre of town. At EcoZip’s homebase, you’ll meet some of our legendary crew, who will prep you for your 15-minute scenic shuttle ride south, in airconditioned comfort, to our “gear up” and staging location.

From there, you’ll be transferred to a custom-built Unimog 4X4 that will carry you through the intertwined freshwater streams of the Kahutara river, then onto Rakanui Station. Then, get set to zip! Clip into 2.2km of high-flying fun across five giant ziplines, where you’ll enjoy bird’s-eye views of the mountains and the ocean.

Throughout your journey, you’ll be accompanied by two of our expert, local guides, who will describe the history of the region, share stories of the local people and explain how your participation in the EcoZip experience is helping to restore sections of Rakanui Station’s farmland back to native forest.

Whether you’re searching for a family-friendly activity or an exhilarating adrenaline fix with friends – EcoZip is fast-becoming one of Kaikōura’s top-rated things to do.

4X4
EXPEDITION

Rakanui Station is a beautiful 3000-acre working farm with rolling valleys and hills covered in native-trees, trickling rivers & fords, cascading waterfalls, and lush farmland. Your 4X4 expedition will take you through the farm’s valleys and paddocks, and past grazing livestock as you travel to the next part of your adventure.

NATIVE FOREST TRAIL

Rakanui Station is blessed with spectacular 360° views. Leaving the Unimog at the top lookout with breathtaking views of the plains and the incredible seaward Kaikōura mountain ranges, you’ll follow a short natural trail through native New Zealand Forest to where the adventure stage of your zipline experience begins!

EPIC ZIPLINES

Five, epic ziplines, ranging from 250m to 610m in length await. All up, you’ll ‘zip’ over 2.2km on a series of ziplines that deliver increasingly spectacular sea and mountain views. And our twin lines make this side-by-side adventure an exhilarating, shared experience.

  • Callaghan’s Mahi

Our inaugural zipline pays tribute to our project manager Tim Callaghan, a key figure in crafting this unique adventure. The third-longest zipline at 442m serves as a thrilling warm-up, enticing you to grab your camera and seize the chance to capture the awe-inspiring vistas, including a panoramic view of the highest point in the Seaward Ranges, Mount Manakau.

  • Rakanui Rocket

Still basking in the glow of our warm-up zipline, your smile will widen as you see what’s coming next. Following a short stroll through native mānuka trees, brace yourself for an exhilarating ride along the second-longest zipline, spanning 471m and soaring high above Rakanui Station. Revel in the 360° views this expansive, 3,000-acre, hill-farm boasts. Keep an eye out for livestock or catch a glimpse of the Coastal Pacific train as it follows the coast. Why not seize the chance to engage in a friendly race with your ziplining partner—will the torpedo or cannonball position emerge victorious?

  • Zipline 3

Though it’s the briefest among the ziplines at 290m, it’s bound to elicit a “WOW”! Descending toward the Kaikōura coast, soaring high above the undulating farmland and native trees, you might catch sight of a whale- or dolphin-watching boat in the broad sweep of South Bay. At this midpoint of your adventure, are you outpacing your ziplining partner in speed?

  • Flinty’s Long Drop

Extending an impressive 613m, our longest zipline will sweep you over regenerating native bush, grazing livestock, and Flinty’s Hut. While several Flinty’s Huts are scattered in the area, Rakanui Station hosts the original, and having stood for over 80 years. Named in honour of the local icon, Alan Flint who revitalised the hut in the 1960s, it has accumulated memories from the young and old alike throughout its existence. As you fly towards the fifth zipline, make sure to gaze towards Kaikōura Peninsula, you may just see a whale having a splashing great time!

  • Kārearea

Complete your ziplining journey by spreading your arms wide and gliding like the Kārearea, New Zealand’s native falcon, across this spectacular 384m zipline. Challenge yourself to reach our maximum speed of 70 km/h! As you near the conclusion of your ziplining adventure, the sight of beehives, the gentle sounds of a nearby stream and the native birdsong will surround you. Next, take a short, leisurely stroll beneath the cooling canopy of long-established native forest. Keep a lookout for Moggy, eagerly awaiting to greet you at the end of your adventure.

  • We had not been on a zip wire before this trip. EcoZip staff were very welcoming and very professional. We were well prepared for the zip wires and our guides did a great job making sure we were all set before each run. The walk back to the centre with some information about the local flora and fauna was a great addition. We would thoroughly recommend EcoZip.
